Imagine you’ve just watered your patio tomatoes, the soil feels perfectly moist, and they’re getting six hours of sun. Yet the leaves are yellowing, and the fruit is sparse. You’ve checked for pests, you’ve fed them a balanced 10-10-10, but nothing helps. Before you dump more fertilizer, stop. The problem might be hiding in the very soil you bought.
We’re not talking about water or light—those are the usual suspects. We’re talking about pH. In containers, pH problems are amplified because the confined root zone has no buffer. If your potting mix is off, your plants can’t absorb nutrients no matter how much you feed them. This is the quiet killer of container gardens, and it’s fixable.
Why pH Matters More in Pots
Soil pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity, on a scale of 0 to 14, with 7 neutral. It’s logarithmic, meaning each step is a tenfold change. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic to neutral soil, pH 6.0 to 7.0, though 5.5 to 7.5 is generally acceptable (Oregon State University Extension). When pH drifts out of that range, plants literally can’t absorb nutrients, even if those nutrients are present. You could be pouring on fertilizer, but the roots are locked out.
In a garden bed, soil has volume and natural buffering from organic matter and minerals. In a pot, that buffer is thin. Your container mix starts fresh, but over time, watering leaches nutrients and shifts pH. Hard tap water can push it alkaline, while decomposing organic matter can make it acidic. The result is a nutrient deficiency that looks like a pest problem or a watering issue, but is actually a chemical imbalance.
Test Your Potting Mix, Not Your Garden Soil
You wouldn’t fertilize without a soil test, and the same logic applies to containers. The easiest way to know what your mix needs is a soil test, which recommends quantities of N, P, and K and the best timing (Mississippi State University Extension). But you don’t need a lab for pH—a simple home test kit works. Test the potting mix itself, not the garden soil, because they can differ wildly.
If your pH is below 6.0, you’ll need to raise it. Add lime, which is the standard amendment for raising pH (Oregon State University Extension). If it’s above 7.0, lower it with elemental sulfur (Oregon State University Extension). But here’s the catch: in a container, you can’t just till in amendments like you would in a bed. You need to mix them thoroughly into the potting mix before planting, or top-dress and water in. And because pots are small, you have to be precise—too much lime or sulfur can swing the pH too far.
Container-Specific pH Fixes
- Start with a high-quality potting mix that’s labeled for containers, not garden soil, because garden soil compacts and drains poorly in pots.
- Test your water. If it’s alkaline (pH above 7), consider using rainwater or adjusting with a few drops of vinegar per gallon to lower the water pH.
- Re-test your potting mix every 4-6 weeks, because frequent watering flushes nutrients and can alter pH.
- If you’re growing acid-loving plants like blueberries, keep the pH between 4.5 and 5.8 (Oregon State University Extension), which is lower than most vegetables.
For example, let’s say you’re growing a Meyer lemon in a pot. Citrus trees are popular container plants, and the Meyer lemon is relatively cold-hardy and can be grown in containers (UF/IFAS Citrus Guide). Citrus prefer slightly acidic soil, around pH 6.0 to 7.0. If your tap water is alkaline, over time it can push your potting mix above 7.0, causing iron deficiency—yellow leaves with green veins. That’s a classic pH problem, not a watering one.
The Bottom Line: Don’t Fertilize Blind
Container gardening is about control, and pH is the control you’re probably ignoring. Before you reach for that fertilizer bag again, test your potting mix. Adjust with lime or sulfur as needed, and monitor every few weeks. Your plants will thank you with vigorous growth and real harvests.
