Spring Soil Prep: Test pH Before You Plant, Not After

Imagine you've just sunk a month of weekends into your veggie patch. You watered, you weeded, you fed. And still, the tomatoes look like they're sulking, the beans are pale, and the zucchini has stopped growing. You reach for fertilizer, but deep down you know it won't fix this. The problem isn't food—it's the soil's pH.

Here's the blunt truth: if your soil pH is off, your plants can't absorb nutrients, no matter how much fertilizer you throw at them (Oregon State University Extension). And the fix isn't complicated. You just have to test before you plant, not after everything's gone wrong. This guide is for anyone who's tired of playing guessing games with their garden. Why pH Matters More Than You Think

Soil pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity, on a scale from 0 to 14. Seven is neutral, below is acidic, above is alkaline. And it's logarithmic, which means a drop from 7 to 6 is ten times more acidic. When you're out of that range, nutrients get locked up. Iron, phosphorus, you name it—your plants can't get at them. That's why you see yellow leaves, stunted growth, and poor fruit. It's not a fertilizer problem; it's a soil chemistry problem. And the only way to know is to test.

Step 1: Test Your Soil pH

First, get a soil test kit. You can find them at any garden center, but a lab test through your local extension service is more accurate. If you're in a pinch, a simple probe works.
